Citizenship and Rights: Transformed by struggles for gender equality?

Mrs. Thida Khus, Executive Director of SILAKA Cambodia, was invited as one of the keynote speakers during a Gendernet Conference on Gendered Governance in Copenhagen, Denmark on 30th September to 1st October, 2009. She addressed the prevailing questions on Gender, Citizenship and Rights, and whether the concept of participation has been altered by the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

She discussed the issues of how to discuss practices of citizenship where the vast majority of women and men in developing countries reside in remote areas outside the capital do not have knowledge about their rights as citizens.  During the discussions, she also participated actively in debates on issues with a panel of other practitioners and policymaker which was facilitated by Mr. Knud Vilby, a local journalist.

The conference was organized by a planning committee consisting of representatives from Gendernet DKs member organizations & UNDP Nordic Office with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
