World Bank – CSO East Asia Pacific
Regional Workshop
18-20 June 2008 Jarkarta, Indonesia
A Workshop was jointly organized by World Bank and CSO on 18-20 June, 2008 in Jarkarta, Indonesia.

The proposed regional workshop provided opportunity for NGOs/CSOs in Asia Pacific countries and the Bank to engage in a constructive dialogue on concerns that could contextualize the formulation of the latter’s regional strategy. Are the global themes attuned to the realities in the region? As the food crisis is seen as a long-term problem, it is thus suggested that it becomes the focal theme for the discussion.
The objectives of the workshop are as follow:
- to discuss issues/topics related to the food crisis in the region that contextualize the regional strategy of the Bank in East Asia-Pacific
- to provide feedback on the process of formulation of the Bank’s regional strategy
- to brainstorm and discuss on possible modalities of engagement for improving or enhancing NGO/CSO-World Bank relations at the national and regional levels
- to discuss ways to address youth unemployment in the Asia Pacific Region – this particular topic was suggested by CSOs at the 2007 Annual Meetings.
CSO and NGO participants came from China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, Mauritania, Mongolia, and Vietnam.
The discussion was divided into 4 themes:
- Food crisis in the region;
- World Bank Regional Strategy;
- Modalities on CSO/NGO and World Bank engagement;
- Youth unemployment in the region.
