Title:    Summary of launching program of CPWP
Posting Date: 11/29/2006 2:34:27 AM

took place on October 9, 2006 at Sunway Hotel, Phnom Penh

Guest speakers:
  • H.E. Khim Chomroeun, Secretary of State, Ministry of Women and Veterans’ Affairs
  • H.E Ho Naun, Cambodian People’s Party
  • H.E. Soeung Rithysak, Representative, FUNCINPEC Party,
  • H.E. Mu Sochour, Representative, Sam Rainsy Party
  • H.E. Ngan Chamroeun, Deputy Director General of General Administration, Ministry of Interior
  • Ms. Pok Nanda, Director of Women For Prosperity
  • Ms. Thida Khus, Director of SILAKA

Cambodia has joined the CEDAW along with another 180 countries. In 2005 there are only 2 countries, Switzerland and Rwanda, who have committed to equal participation in politics. Currently in Cambodia, only 18.7% of National Assembly members, and only about 8% of Commune Councilors, are women. We would like to improve this figure in the second commune election. Establishing the CPWP will help to improve governance and local governance through democratic development.

The program was welcomed speech by Mrs. Pok Nanda, opened by HE. Khim Chamroeun, and subject presentation by Ms. Thida Khus.

Speech by the 3 political party’s representatives

  • H.E Ho Naun, CPP
The Paris agreements, based on a democratic and multi-party system, allowed both women and men to have equal rights to participate in politics, economics, social, and cultural activities. There are many government documents to support women. CPP has 759 women councilors out of the total 951 women councilors in Cambodia. The vision of CPP is to maximize the proportion of women participating in the next commune level.

  • H.E Mu Sochour, SRP
Cambodian culture values women but does not provide equal opportunity in work. Why do women need to join the politics? Women have different roles, values, justice system, and economics. We hope that the next elections in 2007 and 2008 will be free of violence full of participation. SRP has conducted representatives from the grassroots level. Up to today the ratio of women appears to be 30% to the commune level.

  • H.E Soeung Rithysak, FUNCINPEC
CPWP is a very important mechanism to promote women’s participation in politics and decision making. The FUNCINPEC party supports the CPWP’s recommendation on implementing a quota system. Funcinpec works to reach at least having 25% women in the next Commune/Sangkat election.
